Abstract

The concept of transformational leadership (TL) has emerged as a critical framework for improving the effectiveness and development of educational institutions worldwide. In the context of Chinese higher vocational colleges (HVCs), the need for a transformative leadership approach is particularly pertinent due to the unique challenges these institutions face in balancing academic rigor with vocational training demands. This paper explores the development of transformational leadership among teachers in Chinese HVCs, an area that remains under-researched in both global and Chinese educational leadership literature. TL, characterized by idealized influence, inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation, and individualized consideration, offers a promising pathway for addressing issues such as teacher disengagement, stagnant professional development, and limited student-teacher interaction. The study investigates the critical components of TL, evaluates the current state of leadership in Chinese HVCs, and identifies specific strategies for fostering TL within these institutions. Drawing upon a range of empirical studies, institutional reports, and leadership theories, the paper examines how the adoption of transformational leadership practices can enhance teacher motivation, improve pedagogical outcomes, and align vocational education with the rapidly evolving demands of the Chinese economy. Furthermore, it offers policy recommendations for institutional leaders and government policymakers aimed at overcoming cultural and systemic barriers to TL adoption. The findings indicate that, while significant challenges exist, transformational leadership presents a transformative opportunity to reframe the role of vocational educators and reshape the landscape of vocational education in China. This paper contributes to the growing body of knowledge on leadership in education, with particular emphasis on vocational institutions in China, offering both theoretical insights and practical recommendations for leadership development in the 21st century.
